Kerala airport declares emergency following bomb threat on Air India flight

Passengers evacuated safely as aircraft is isolated for security checks

Thiruvananthapuram , August 22 2024 :On Thursday morning, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was placed on high alert after an Air India flight from Mumbai reported a bomb threat. The pilot communicated the threat to airport authorities at approximately 7:30 am as the aircraft was approaching its destination. In response to the imminent risk, the airport promptly declared a full emergency at 7:36 am to ensure comprehensive safety measures.

Safe Landing and Evacuation

The flight, which carried 135 passengers, landed safely at around 8:00 am. To minimize risk, the aircraft was directed to an isolation bay where it underwent necessary precautionary measures. By 8:44 am, all passengers had been safely evacuated from the aircraft without any reported injuries. The emergency protocols were effectively executed, and there were no disruptions to other airport operations during this period. The swift and coordinated response ensured the safety and security of everyone involved.

Investigation and Current Status

Following the safe evacuation, authorities have launched an investigation into the source and authenticity of the bomb threat. According to Air India, the aircraft was parked in a remote bay for mandatory security checks to verify the validity of the threat. All passengers and crew members disembarked safely, and the airport resumed its normal operations shortly thereafter. No impact on life or significant operational disruptions have been reported, and the investigation continues to determine the threat’s origin and credibility.

Recent Trends in Security Alerts

This incident is part of a concerning trend of hoax threats impacting aviation security. On June 17, a 13-year-old was detained for sending a false bomb threat email to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Additionally, on June 18, 41 airports across India received false bomb threat emails, prompting extensive security sweeps that ultimately found no real danger. These recent events highlight the need for continued vigilance and robust response strategies to address both genuine and hoax threats effectively.
