IMD Issues Orange Alert for Six Districts in Kerala

Kerela : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Kerala today, signaling the likelihood of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. The districts under alert are Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. This alert is indicative of potentially severe weather conditions that could lead to significant disruptions, urging local authorities and residents to take precautionary measures to ensure safety.

The IMD has also issued a warning to fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the sea. This advisory comes in response to forecasts of squally weather, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 55 kmph along the coasts of Kerala and Lakshadweep. Such conditions are hazardous, particularly for small boats, and the IMD’s cautionary advice aims to prevent any mishaps at sea.

In response to the weather alert, authorities in Pathanamthitta district are taking proactive steps to manage the situation. Due to the continuous heavy rainfall, officials have indicated that water may need to be released from the Muzhiyar dam and Maniyar barrage to control the water levels in the catchment areas. As a result, residents living along the banks of the Kakkattar and Pampa rivers have been instructed to stay alert and prepare for possible flooding.
