Parliament Adjourns Sine Die: Lok Sabha Records High Productivity, Rajya Sabha Faces Opposition Walkout

New Delhi, August 9, 2024: Both houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die on Friday, bringing an early end to the Monsoon session, originally scheduled to conclude on August 12.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the impressive productivity of the Lower House, reporting a figure above 130 percent. The Lok Sabha conducted its proceedings for approximately 115 hours. Birla noted that the Union Budget 2024-25, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 23, was discussed for 27 hours and 19 minutes. During the session, 12 government bills were introduced, and four key bills, including the Finance Bill, the Appropriation Bill, the Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation Bill, and the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak bill, were passed by the house.

In the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that the Upper House held 22 hours of discussions on the Union Budget, with a total of 90 hours of sittings during the session. However, the Rajya Sabha witnessed significant disruptions. A confrontation erupted after SP MP Jaya Bachchan demanded an apology from the Chairman over remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari against Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. Bachchan, supported by several women MPs including Sonia Gandhi, criticized the tone used by the Chair, leading to a walkout by Opposition members. The session ended amidst these tensions, underscoring the ongoing challenges in maintaining order and decorum in Parliament.
