Jalna July 29 2024 : Former Union Minister and BJP MP Bhagwat Karad has stated that the Maratha community should not be granted reservations under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota. Karad, a Rajya Sabha MP, highlighted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) firm position against altering the existing OBC quota.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Karad expressed confidence that the Maharashtra government’s decision to grant a 10% quota to Marathas would withstand legal challenges. “As an OBC, I oppose extending the benefits of the OBC quota to the Maratha community,” Karad remarked.
This stance comes amid ongoing protests led by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, who has been advocating for the issuance of Kunbi certificates to Marathas, thereby allowing them access to OBC reservations. However, this proposal has met with strong resistance from OBC groups, who argue that it would dilute their existing entitlements.
The debate over the Maratha quota continues to stir controversy in Maharashtra, with both political and social groups weighing in on the implications of such a move.
