May 28, 2025 : Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh added another feather to his cap by clinching the gold medal in the men’s 10,000-meter race at a prestigious international athletics meet held in Bangkok on Tuesday. The 25-year-old delivered a stunning performance, outpacing a competitive field to secure the top podium finish, further establishing himself as one of India’s most promising talents in track and field.

Singh, who has been steadily gaining attention over the past two years, clocked an impressive timing of 28:17.89, narrowly edging out athletes from Japan and Kenya in a thrilling final lap. His performance not only earned him gold but also qualified him for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships scheduled to be held later this year.

A Rising Star in Indian Athletics

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Gulveer Singh has quietly become a force to reckon with in Indian long-distance running. Trained at the Army Sports Institute, his career trajectory has been on a sharp upward curve, with consistent performances at national and international events.

In 2023, Singh grabbed attention by finishing in the top five at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Since then, he has been working relentlessly on improving his pace, endurance, and tactical racing skills. His latest victory in Bangkok is seen as a testament to his discipline and determination.

“I’m proud to win this medal for my country,” said Singh after the race. “The competition was tough, but I trusted my training and strategy. This win motivates me to keep pushing harder.”

India’s Growing Presence in Distance Running

Gulveer Singh’s win is also reflective of India’s growing strength in long-distance disciplines, traditionally dominated by East African and East Asian nations. With improved training facilities, scientific coaching, and international exposure, a new generation of Indian athletes is beginning to challenge global standards.

Athletics Federation of India (AFI) President Adille Sumariwalla praised Singh’s performance, calling it “a significant milestone for Indian distance running.” He added, “Gulveer’s victory demonstrates the effectiveness of our grassroots programs and the dedication of our coaches and support staff.”

Eyes Set on Bigger Stages

With this victory, Gulveer Singh has now qualified for the Asian Athletics Championships and is expected to be a key contender at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. His focus is also on meeting the Olympic qualification mark for the Paris 2026 Games, a goal he’s been pursuing with increasing urgency.

His coach, Surender Singh, a former national-level runner himself, expressed confidence in Gulveer’s future: “He’s just getting started. With the kind of form and mindset he’s showing, bigger international medals are within reach.”

Looking Ahead

As Indian athletics continues to evolve, athletes like Gulveer Singh represent a new era of competitiveness and ambition. His recent gold medal not only adds to India’s medal tally but also inspires countless young runners across the country to dream bigger and run faster.

For now, Singh is set to return to his training base, with his eyes firmly set on more podium finishes in the months to come.
