Kewal Singh Pathania to Lead Indian Powerlifting Team at World Championship in Norway, CM Sukhu Congratulates

New Delhi, April 11: Kewal Singh Pathania, Member of the Legislative Assembly and Deputy Chief Whip of Himachal Pradesh, who also serves as the Senior Vice President of Powerlifting India and President of the Himachal Pradesh Powerlifting Association, met with Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in New Delhi today. During the meeting, Pathania shared significant updates about his upcoming international engagement in the field of sports.

Pathania informed the Chief Minister that Powerlifting India has officially nominated him as the Manager of the Indian Powerlifting Team, which comprises 80 athletes. These players are set to represent the country at the prestigious World Classic & Equipped Bench Press Championship scheduled to be held in Drammen, Norway from May 17 to 24, 2025.

Highlighting the global importance of the event, Pathania mentioned that over 82 countries are expected to participate in this international championship, making it one of the most competitive and widely recognized events in the world of powerlifting. He also stated that he has previously accompanied the Indian team to various international destinations including the United States, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, Dubai, and Hong Kong, showcasing India’s strength in the sport and gaining valuable exposure and experience on the global stage.

Apart from his sporting responsibilities, Pathania shared his intention to use this international platform to promote the rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship of Himachal Pradesh. He said that he plans to spread awareness about Himachali handicrafts and organic farming practices during his visit to Norway. By doing so, he aims to bring global attention to the state’s sustainable practices and vibrant artisanal communities, creating avenues for cultural exchange and international recognition.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated Kewal Singh Pathania on being bestowed with this prestigious role and acknowledged it as not just a personal achievement but a matter of pride for the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. He commended Pathania for his consistent efforts in promoting sports, especially powerlifting, and for taking the initiative to represent and highlight the cultural richness of Himachal on an international platform.

The Chief Minister also appreciated Pathania’s multifaceted contribution — both in the field of public service and sports — and extended his best wishes for the success of the Indian team in the upcoming world championship. He expressed confidence that the Indian contingent, under the leadership and guidance of Pathania, would make the nation proud.

This recognition marks another milestone in Kewal Singh Pathania’s career, reaffirming his commitment to sports development and international engagement. His dual role — as a leader in the powerlifting arena and as a cultural ambassador for Himachal Pradesh — is being seen as a unique example of how sports and tradition can be harmoniously promoted on the world stage.
