Paris [France], August 3, 2024 : Indian archer Deepika Kumari’s journey at the Paris Olympics came to an end on Saturday as she was defeated by South Korea’s Suhyeon Nam in the quarterfinals of the individual women’s archery event. The match, held at Les Invalides, concluded with Kumari falling 4-6 in a tightly contested battle.
Deepika Kumari started strongly, securing the first set with a score of 28-26, having hit 9, 10, and 9. However, her performance fluctuated in the subsequent sets. Despite hitting a 10 at the beginning of the second set, Kumari struggled with consistency and lost the set 25-28 after a low score of 6 on her second try.
In the third set, both archers began with a 10, but Kumari clinched the set 29-28 with a decisive final shot of 10. The fourth set saw Kumari initially performing well with a 10 but faltering with a 7 on her second attempt. She lost the set 27-29 despite hitting another 10 later in the round.
The fifth set, crucial for advancing, ended with both archers tied at 5-5. Kumari’s three consecutive 9s were not enough to secure victory as she lost the final set 27-29, ending her Olympic campaign.
Earlier, Kumari had progressed to the quarterfinals by defeating Germany’s Michelle Kroppen 6-4 in the Round of 16. Deepika started strong with a 27-24 win in the first set and despite a setback in the fourth set, she secured her spot in the quarterfinals by winning the third set 2-0 and drawing the fifth set 1-1.
The Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics has so far won three bronze medals, all in shooting events.
