Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya Launches Indigenous Anti-Doping Chemical Reference Material, Strengthening India’s Role in Clean Sport

Union Sports Minister emphasizes cutting-edge research, scientific integrity, and global collaboration in anti-doping science at NDTL

Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, today launched an indigenous Chemical Reference Material (CRM) – Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite (LTM) – at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), New Delhi. This critical chemical standard is essential for anti-doping analysis in all World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratories.

Developed jointly by NDTL and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, the CRM is a landmark achievement for Atmanirbhar Bharat, reflecting India’s commitment to scientific excellence and global collaboration in anti-doping. The Reference Material will be shared with WADA-accredited laboratories worldwide, furthering the promotion of clean sport and scientific integrity.

Dr. Mandaviya launched the CRM during the 22nd Governing Body Meeting of NDTL, also unveiling the latest edition of NDTL’s newsletter, which highlights recent scientific achievements, strategic collaborations, and its expanding role in global anti-doping efforts.

The Union Minister stressed the importance of supporting cutting-edge research in anti-doping science through extramural grant policies. These grants will encourage academic institutions, laboratories, and young researchers to work on areas such as synthesis of RMs for banned substances, pharmacokinetics, longitudinal biomarker profiling, and analytical development.

Dr. Mandaviya reviewed the progress of the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU), inaugurated at NDTL earlier this year, and suggested expanding the programme to include more athlete biological passports from neighbouring countries, positioning India as a hub for anti-doping research in the region.

Additionally, a new framework for scientific recognition and awards was introduced to honor contributions in doping control research, laboratory excellence, and public education, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of innovation, integrity, and collaboration.

The launch of the indigenous Reference Material underscores India’s leadership in anti-doping science and reinforces the nation’s commitment to transparent and ethical practices in both national and international sports.
