Gurgaon, July 29, 2024: Amid a significant rise in fraud cases involving scammers seeking personal details such as PAN cards and one-time passwords (OTPs) to steal money, a Gurgaon-based software engineer recently outsmarted fraudsters in a witty exchange that has left social media users in splits.
Techie Gaurav Sharan shared his humorous encounter on social media platform X. The scammers, posing as HDFC bank representatives, instructed Sharan to update his PAN details through a fraudulent link. Recognizing the scam, Sharan responded with humor, offering to redesign their fake website to resemble HDFC’s net banking site for ₹20,000.
The conversation, shared by Sharan with the caption “Never mess with a developer,” quickly gained traction, garnering 25,700 views and numerous comments. Many users dubbed it a “reverse scam” and reacted with laughter.
Comments ranged from joking inquiries about whether Sharan received the ₹20,000 payment to suggestions to forward the exchange to HDFC for better UI/UX hiring. One user humorously remarked, “Why did you censor the phone number? Protecting the privacy of a scammer?”
The incident highlights both the creativity and vigilance needed to tackle online fraud, leaving social media in stitches over the techie’s clever counter-scam.
