In a rare reported case, 18-Year-Old Youth with dual infected gallbladders treated successfully at Fortis Escorts Faridabad

Case of duplication of gallbladder occurs in approximately 1 in 4000 individuals

Faridabad, 10th April 2025: In a rare reported case, Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad have successfully treated an 18-year-old young man diagnosed with dual gallbladders and was suffering from acute calculus cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder caused by gallstones). Occurrence of dual gallbladders is a rare congenital condition occurring in approximately 1 in 4,000 individuals. A team of doctors led by Dr. Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant, Department of General Surgery at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad performed a minimally invasive laparoscopic cholecystectomy, successfully removing both the gallbladders, inflamed and infected with gallstones. The patient made a quick recovery and was discharged after 24 hours with no visible scars or stitches, thanks to the use of 5 mm laparoscopic ports.
The patient, a resident of Faridabad, had been experiencing repeated abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting for the last three months. He had initially sought medical treatment at a local nursing home in Faridabad but his symptoms persisted. Upon admission at Fortis Escorts Faridabad, an ultrasound was conducted, which suggested the presence of gallstones and an unusual pouch extending from the gallbladder. Given the ongoing pain and unclear diagnostic results, laparoscopy was performed, which confirmed the presence of two gallbladders, both surrounded by thick scar tissue due to repeated infections. The first gallbladder was located in its usual position on the liver, while the second was located near the common bile duct. Due to this unusual anatomy, careful dissection was required to determine whether the gallbladders had separate ducts or shared a connection to the bile duct. After a precise and carefully executed laparoscopic procedure, both the infected gallbladders were successfully removed.
Giving details of the case, Dr. Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant, Department of General Surgery at Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad, said, “Presence of dual gallbladder is an extremely rare congenital condition. The complexity of this condition made the surgery highly challenging, as any error could have caused serious damage to the bile ducts. After carefully removing both the gallbladders through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, we were able to preserve the vital organs and prevent further risks. If left untreated, the patient would have faced chronic infections, bile duct issues, and an increased risk of gallbladder cancer, all of which could have been life-threatening. Through timely and precise surgical intervention, we were able to safely remove both the gallbladders, saving the patient’s life.”

Yogendra Nath Awadhiya, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad said, “This was an extremely rare reported case Dr. Mohsin Khan and his team successfully conducted the surgery with precision, ensuring the best outcome for the patient. At Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad, we remain committed to delivering advanced medical care and handling rare and complex cases with state-of-the art technology and clinical expertise.”
