Amid intensifying campaigning for the Kerala Assembly elections, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched a sharp political attack during his visit to Alappuzha on April 1, 2026. He criticised the emergence of former party colleague G. Sudhakaran as an Independent candidate in the Ambalappuzha constituency, claiming it reflects a strategic understanding between rival parties.
The Chief Minister alleged that support extended to the rebel candidate by factions linked to the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party signals a convergence of interests, contradicting their public political stance in the State.
Mr. Vijayan argued that such developments undermine accusations previously made by opposition alliances against the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) regarding alleged tacit understandings with national parties. He framed the current situation as evidence of shifting political equations driven by electoral convenience.
Referring to recent remarks by Mr. Sudhakaran, the Chief Minister noted claims that he could attract a segment of BJP supporters, further fuelling debate over cross-party voter mobilisation. He suggested that the Independent candidate is navigating a delicate balance between competing political interests.
The Chief Minister also remarked that leaders who break away from their original political base often adopt a more aggressive tone against former allies in an effort to establish credibility with new supporters.
The contest in Ambalappuzha has added a new dimension to the electoral landscape in central Kerala, with the ruling Left Democratic Front facing an unexpected challenge. Despite this, Mr. Vijayan expressed confidence in the electorate, stating that the region has historically prioritised party ideology over individual personalities.
Drawing from past political developments in the district, he maintained that internal disruptions have not weakened the party’s standing in the long term. He also invoked the legacy of historic movements like the Punnapra Vayalar uprising, highlighting the region’s tradition of ideological commitment.
As the campaign gathers pace, the evolving dynamics in Ambalappuzha are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the outcome in this politically significant district.
