New Delhi, June 17— The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has officially kicked off its Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025, aimed at empowering university-level students with deeper insights into human rights issues. The four-week programme began on June 16 at NHRC’s headquarters in New Delhi and has brought together 80 selected students from a highly competitive pool of over 1,400 applicants.
The interns hail from 42 institutions spanning 20 states and union territories, reflecting the nation’s rich regional and academic diversity. Participants come from a wide range of disciplines including Law, Social Sciences, Journalism, Psychology, Social Work, Gender Studies, International Relations, and Digital Humanities.


Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of NHRC, inaugurated the programme, applauding the diverse mix of participants and India’s ethos of “unity in diversity.” In his address, he emphasized the importance of justice, empathy, and peer learning. He urged students to use their knowledge for meaningful social transformation and contribute to a society where equal rights and opportunities are guaranteed for all.

Bharat Lal, Secretary General of NHRC, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the youth’s vital role in advancing human rights. He encouraged interns to develop sensitivity and compassion and to balance their understanding of rights with responsibilities. He called upon them to channel India’s civilizational values to build a more inclusive and equitable society.

Providing an overview of the internship, Samir Kumar, Joint Secretary, NHRC, shared the Commission’s ongoing efforts to educate young minds on human rights. He highlighted the programme’s structure, which includes interactive sessions, field visits to institutions like NGOs, police stations, and shelter homes, as well as group research projects and contests designed to inspire innovative thinking and social responsibility.
Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director at NHRC, delivered the vote of thanks and welcomed the interns to a journey of learning and transformation.
This flagship internship programme stands as a significant platform for India’s youth to engage with real-world human rights challenges and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress in justice, equality, and human dignity.
