New Delhi : Veteran Bollywood actor and director Manoj Kumar passed away in Mumbai this morning at the age of 87, marking the end of an era in Indian cinema. Known for his deeply patriotic roles and powerful storytelling, Manoj Kumar was affectionately nicknamed ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his significant contribution to films centered around nationalism and social themes.
Born as Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan), Manoj Kumar entered the film industry with a clear vision—to use cinema as a medium to inspire and awaken patriotism among Indians. He soon became one of the most influential actors of his time, crafting a unique space in Hindi cinema through his meaningful and message-driven films.
His breakthrough came with Upkar (1967), a film inspired by then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.” The movie not only turned out to be a massive commercial success but also earned Kumar the National Film Award for Best Direction. He continued to shine with patriotic hits like Purab Aur Paschim (1970) and Kranti (1981), where he not only acted but also took the reins as writer and director. These films left a deep imprint on the collective consciousness of the nation.
In addition to his patriotic repertoire, Manoj Kumar showcased his versatility in films like Shor, Sanyasi, Patthar Ke Sanam, and Roti Kapda Aur Makan—the latter being a bold take on the struggles of the common man in a rapidly changing India.
Over his illustrious career, Kumar received numerous accolades for his contributions to Indian cinema. He was honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest recognition in Indian film.
