New Delhi : India has achieved a significant milestone in medical technology by developing its first indigenous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine. The machine is set to be installed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, by October for trials. This development is expected to revolutionize India’s healthcare sector by reducing dependency on imported medical devices and cutting down treatment costs.
Currently, 80-85 percent of medical equipment in India is imported, leading to high costs and limited access to advanced diagnostic tools. The indigenous MRI machine is a major step toward making India self-reliant in medical technology, aligning with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. By developing domestic capabilities, India aims to enhance affordability and accessibility in healthcare services, benefiting millions of patients across the country.
AIIMS New Delhi Director, M Srinivas, emphasized the importance of this initiative in fostering innovation and technological advancements in India’s medical sector. Speaking to reporters, he stated that the initiative will allow companies and research institutions to collaborate, refine the technology, and ensure that India produces world-class medical equipment.
The MRI machine, developed with advanced indigenous technology, is expected to match global standards while being cost-effective. The affordability of this homegrown MRI system will enable more hospitals and diagnostic centers, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, to provide better healthcare services. This will be a crucial step in bridging the gap between urban and rural medical infrastructure.
Beyond cost reduction, the indigenous MRI machine will promote research and development within the country, encouraging Indian scientists and engineers to innovate further in the field of medical imaging and diagnostics. The project also reflects India’s commitment to becoming a global hub for medical technology manufacturing, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers, and enhancing national healthcare security.
