New Delhi, 18 March 2025: Shri Sadanand Shet Tanawade, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Goa, raised an urgent concern in the Rajya Sabha regarding the increasing menace of spam calls, phishing scams, and data privacy breaches affecting millions of Indian citizens. Addressing the house, he highlighted the alarming rise in cyber fraud cases where innocent people are losing their hard-earned money due to fraudulent calls and deceptive messages.
Shri Tanawade expressed deep concern over the misuse of personal data by cybercriminals, who exploit information obtained through illegal means. He emphasized that such scams not only violate data privacy but also put the financial security of the public at significant risk.
He pointed out that Goa, like many other states, has also witnessed a surge in cyber-related crimes. Many residents have fallen victim to malicious calls and online scams, resulting in severe financial losses. The rise in these incidents has sparked fear and anxiety among the public, as personal data is being misused to carry out fraudulent activities.
During his address, Shri Tanawade urged the central government to take swift and decisive action against these cybercriminals. He called for the introduction of stronger laws, enhanced digital security measures, and a comprehensive regulatory framework to protect citizens from falling prey to such scams. Strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, he argued, is crucial to safeguarding the privacy and financial well-being of the people.
He also requested the government to work closely with law enforcement agencies and telecom operators to identify and curb the sources of spam calls and phishing attacks. According to Shri Tanawade, public awareness campaigns on digital safety and prompt action against offenders can play a vital role in mitigating these threats.
In conclusion, Shri Sadanand Shet Tanawade reiterated the urgent need for the government to prioritize data privacy and cybersecurity. He stressed that safeguarding citizens’ digital lives is essential to building trust in India’s digital ecosystem and ensuring a safer online environment for all.
