New Delhi, March 12, 2025 : In a bid to manage the massive surge in passenger traffic during the Holi festival, Northern Railway operated 20 special trains from the Delhi area yesterday. These trains were introduced to facilitate a comfortable and convenient travel experience for passengers heading home to celebrate the festival. For the first time, pre-scheduled general unreserved special trains were planned specifically for the eastern part of the country. This proactive initiative aimed to stagger passenger movement and ensure better crowd management by disseminating information in advance through newspapers, electronic media, SMS, and WhatsApp messages, particularly in areas where a large number of people from Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern India reside.
These Holi special trains were deployed on high-demand routes, including Anand Vihar Terminal – Muzaffarpur, Delhi – Patna, New Delhi – Dibrugarh, and New Delhi – Barauni, among others. The objective was to accommodate passengers traveling to major cities and towns in the eastern region, reducing congestion in regular trains and offering relief to thousands of commuters.
To ensure smooth and safe operations during this peak travel period, Northern Railway implemented several key measures at major stations. These arrangements included:
Dedicated Holding Areas: Operational holding areas were set up at stations to provide passengers with comfortable waiting spaces before their trains’ departure.
Effective Queue Management: To prevent overcrowding and maintain order, stringent queue management protocols were enforced.
Increased Staff Deployment: Additional commercial staff and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were deployed to assist passengers, manage ticketing services, and enhance security measures.
Restricted Cross-Movement: To streamline passenger flow and prevent unnecessary congestion, cross-movement at platform exits and entrances was restricted.
The efforts made by Northern Railway were widely appreciated by passengers, who found the dedicated services beneficial in managing the usual rush seen during Holi travel. By introducing these special trains, Indian Railways aimed to reduce overcrowding in regular services and provide a more efficient travel experience for those journeying home for the festival.
Building on yesterday’s success, Northern Railway is set to operate more than 25 additional Holi special trains from the Delhi area today. This initiative is part of a larger plan by Indian Railways to run 1,200 Holi special trains across the country, with 400 of them under Northern Railway’s jurisdiction.
The decision to introduce these special trains reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring seamless and hassle-free travel for passengers during festive occasions. By increasing the number of trains, deploying additional staff, and implementing strategic measures, Northern Railway aims to enhance passenger convenience while prioritizing safety and efficiency.
With more special trains running today, passengers can expect better accessibility to their destinations, reduced waiting times, and an overall improved travel experience during one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals.
