57 workers buried as avalanche strikes BRO labor camp in Uttarakhand, 10 pulled to safety

New Delhi, Feb 28,2025: A devastating avalanche buried 57 workers at a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labor camp between Mana and Badrinath on Friday.

According to the Indian Army, the avalanche struck around 07:15 AM, trapping the workers inside eight containers and a shed.

Indian Army response teams, including over 100 personnel from the Ibex Brigade, were swiftly deployed along with doctors, ambulances, and rescue equipment.

By 11:50 AM, rescue teams had located five containers and successfully saved 10 individuals, all found alive. Among them, four are reported to be in critical condition.

Search operations continue for the remaining three containers, as rescue teams work tirelessly to free the trapped individuals. However, ongoing small-scale avalanches in the area have slowed progress, requiring extreme caution in rescue efforts.

Heavy snowfall persists in the region, and GREF teams are actively clearing the road between Joshimath and Mana to facilitate relief operations. Additional medical aid is being mobilized from Joshimath to Mana to support rescue and treatment efforts.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the incident as tragic and assured that all necessary assistance is being provided.

“An unfortunate avalanche has hit the Mana area of Joshimath (Uttarakhand) today, affecting the GREF camp of BRO. Spoke to CM Shri @pushkardhami regarding the situation. The administration is extending all possible support to those impacted,” Singh said in a post on X.

“Rescue efforts by local Army units are ongoing. Every possible resource is being utilized to save the trapped personnel,” he added.
