New Delhi : The nation is paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 77th Death Anniversary and Martyr’s Day. A solemn Sarva-Dharma Prarthana (interfaith prayer) ceremony is being held at Gandhi Samadhi, Rajghat in New Delhi, where people of all faiths come together to remember the father of the nation.
Each year, on 30th January, India commemorates the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, a towering figure in the country’s fight for independence. Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence (Ahimsa) and truth (Satya) inspired millions, not just in India, but across the world. His leadership in mobilizing people for peaceful resistance to British rule, through movements like the Salt March and Quit India Movement, played a pivotal role in securing India’s freedom in 1947.
This day is not only a tribute to Gandhi but also observed as Martyrs’ Day, or Shaheed Diwas. It marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, when Nathuram Godse, an extremist, shot him in New Delhi. The day is observed with silence, prayer, and reflection on the values that Gandhi upheld, and it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for the cause of India’s independence.
As part of the observance, a two-minute silence is observed at 11 a.m. across the country, symbolizing the reverence for those who have laid down their lives in service to the nation. Political leaders, officials, and citizens gather at various memorials dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi to pay their respects. The President of India, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries offer floral tributes at Rajghat in New Delhi.
On this day, the entire nation remembers the sacrifices of unsung heroes who gave their lives for the country’s freedom. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on the principles of peace, tolerance, and unity, which continue to guide India in its path of progress and development.
