A tragic crowd surge at the Sheetla Mata Temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district has claimed the lives of at least nine devotees on Tuesday, with several others injured. The incident occurred during routine मंगलवार prayers, when a large number of worshippers had gathered at the temple.
Officials confirmed that the victims are predominantly women. While six identities have been established, efforts are ongoing to confirm the remaining deceased. Authorities have indicated that the number of fatalities could rise as more details emerge.
The state administration has declared financial assistance of ₹6 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh compensation for each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s relief fund.
Local residents have raised concerns about inadequate arrangements to handle the heavy turnout. Eyewitness accounts suggest that insufficient crowd control measures may have contributed to the chaos.
In response to the incident:
The Bihar government has directed the Chief Secretary to submit a comprehensive report on the circumstances leading to the tragedy
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the loss of lives and assured full support to the affected families. Authorities have also emphasized that all necessary medical and logistical assistance is being provided to the injured.
Emergency teams and district officials remain on-site, continuing relief and assessment operations. Crowd management and safety protocols at religious gatherings are expected to come under scrutiny following the incident.
