Centre Raises MSP for Raw Jute to ₹5,925 per Quintal for 2026-27 Season

New Delhi, February 24: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Tuesday cleared the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute for the 2026-27 marketing season. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per the approval, the MSP for TD-3 grade raw jute has been fixed at ₹5,925 per quintal for the upcoming season. The revised rate is said to provide farmers with a return of 61.8 per cent over the all-India weighted average cost of production. The government has reiterated that the new MSP follows its policy of ensuring prices at least 1.5 times the production cost, a benchmark first announced in the Union Budget 2018-19.

Compared to the 2025-26 season, the MSP has been raised by ₹275 per quintal. Officials highlighted that since 2014-15, the support price of raw jute has risen from ₹2,400 per quintal to ₹5,925 per quintal, reflecting an overall increase of ₹3,525 per quintal over the period.

Data shared by the government shows that between 2014-15 and 2025-26, jute farmers received ₹1,342 crore under MSP operations. In contrast, payments during the decade from 2004-05 to 2013-14 stood at ₹441 crore.

The Jute Corporation of India will continue to function as the central nodal agency for undertaking price support operations. Any financial losses arising from procurement activities will be reimbursed by the Centre.
