Faridabad, 10 November 2025: In a landmark medical achievement, Metro Hospital, Faridabad has successfully performed a Simultaneous Liver–Kidney Transplant (SLKT) Now on a senior Buddhist monk from Myanmar (Burma), underscoring the hospital’s excellence in complex organ transplantations and advanced multidisciplinary care.
The patient was suffering from chronic liver disease due to Hepatitis B and chronic kidney disease that had progressed to end-stage renal failure. He had been on maintenance dialysis for a long time and presented to Metro Hospital in a severely decompensated state — wheelchair-bound, with jaundice, ascites, and fatigue. After a thorough evaluation, the expert transplant team concluded that a combined liver and kidney transplant was the only definitive curative option to restore his organ functions and quality of life.
The intricate procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr. Shailendra Lalwani, Director & HOD – Liver Transplant, HPB & GI Surgery, and Dr. Ritesh Mongha, Director & Sr. Consultant – Urology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery, with anaesthetic support led by Dr. Lalit Sehgal, Director & HOD – General & Liver Transplant Anaesthesia, Liver & Oncology ICU.
Precision, Planning, and Execution
Surgical planning by both liver and kidney team was done to optimize outcome as combined liver kidney transplant is a complex surgery. The liver transplant was performed first as a protocol because hemodynamic instability is more during liver transplant due to handling of major blood vessels and complex dissection. This was followed by kidney transplant in the same sitting. Fluid management was also important to to avoid shock or fluid overload during surgery. The coordination between liver, kidney, anaesthesia, and critical-care teams ensured seamless execution and patient safety.
Post-surgery, the patient showed immediate graft function in both organs. He was mobilized early, transferred out of ICU within two weeks, and discharged on the 14th postoperative day—a remarkable recovery timeline for a dual-organ transplant.
