East Champaran (Bihar), January 17: The world’s largest monolithic Shivalinga, standing 33 feet tall and weighing 210 tons, was installed at the Virat Ramayan Mandir in East Champaran, Bihar, on January 17, 2026. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was present at the installation ceremony.

The Shivalinga, carved from a single piece of black granite, features 1,008 smaller Sahasralingams and was crafted under the supervision of sculptor Hemlata Devi, with assistance from her team including Vinayak Baikat Raman. The monolithic structure was prepared in Pattikadu village of Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, and transported over 2,565 kilometers to Bihar, taking 46 days to reach its destination.

The construction of the Shivalinga took nearly ten years and cost approximately ₹3 crore. It has been installed in the Virat Ramayan Temple, which spans 120 acres and will feature 18 spires and 22 shrines upon completion. The main spire is planned to rise 270 feet high, with additional spires ranging from 90 to 180 feet.

The temple, whose foundation was laid by Acharya Kishore Kunal of the Bihar Religious Trust Board, continues to be developed as a major spiritual and cultural landmark. Devotees gathered in large numbers to witness the installation, with rituals including Jalabhishek performed as part of the ceremony.
