The Impressive TimesThe Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has ordered an inquiry into allegations of irregularities in the construction and renovation of the 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow, which served as the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal during his tenure as Delhi Chief Minister.
The CVC has directed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to conduct the investigation following a complaint lodged by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Delhi MLA Vijender Gupta. According to Mr. Gupta, the CVC has taken cognizance of the matter based on substantial facts and evidence pointing to violations in the renovation process.
One of the key allegations pertains to the unauthorized expansion of the bungalow’s premises. Originally, the area of the bungalow was reportedly less than two acres. However, Mr. Gupta claims that adjacent government bungalows and eight Type-5 flats were vacated and merged with the original property, increasing the total area to nearly eight acres. This alleged expansion, according to Gupta, was done without proper approvals and in violation of standard government regulations.
Additionally, concerns have been raised over the excessive expenditure incurred in the renovation process. Reports suggest that the initial estimated cost of the renovation was between ₹15 crore and ₹20 crore, but the final expenditure reportedly exceeded ₹53 crore. The funds were allegedly used for luxury additions, including high-end interiors, imported marble flooring, modular kitchens, and other extravagant modifications.
The CPWD, which oversaw the renovation project, has been tasked with providing detailed records of the construction work. This includes all approvals, cost breakdowns, procurement details, and any modifications made to the original blueprint. The investigating authorities will examine whether proper tendering procedures were followed, whether funds were misused, and whether any undue favoritism was extended to contractors involved in the project.
The inquiry has intensified the political tussle between the ruling AAP government in Delhi and the opposition BJP. While BJP leaders have accused the Kejriwal-led administration of financial misconduct and misusing taxpayers’ money for personal luxury, AAP has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.
A spokesperson from AAP has stated that the renovation was carried out within legal parameters and that all necessary approvals were taken before initiating the work. The party also argues that similar renovations have been carried out for past chief ministers’ residences, questioning the selective scrutiny of this project.
