On its fourth day, “Kanguva” earned ₹8.61 crore on Sunday, reflecting a decline from its Saturday earnings of ₹9.85 crore. Saturday had shown a slight recovery from Friday’s collection of ₹9.50 crore, which itself marked a steep drop from the grand opening on Thursday. The film’s debut had seen a substantial ₹24 crore in earnings across multiple languages—Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam.
By the end of its extended opening weekend, “Kanguva” accumulated ₹51.96 crore across these languages, surpassing the ₹50 crore benchmark in India. The dip in collections indicates that the largely unfavorable feedback might be affecting its box office momentum.
“Kanguva,” directed by Siva and produced by K E Gnanavel Raja, features Suriya as the lead, with Bobby Deol making his debut in Tamil cinema as the primary antagonist. Disha Patani also marks her first appearance in Tamil cinema, adding to the film’s star-studded lineup, which includes notable actors like Jagapathi Babu and Yogi Babu in significant roles.
Marketed as an epic tale spanning generations, “Kanguva” boasts an ambitious narrative of valor and warfare. However, the movie has drawn criticism for its excessive use of violence, loud background score by Devi Sri Prasad, and forceful dialogue delivery. The action scenes, characterized by brutal combat and large-scale war sequences reminiscent of popular Viking-themed series, were pointed out as elements lacking novelty. Despite achieving a noteworthy box office milestone, reviews highlight the film’s shortcomings, such as its reliance on high-octane violence and a soundtrack that can feel overwhelming. Viewers have also mentioned feeling a sense of déjà vu due to similarities with other action dramas available on streaming platforms. Nevertheless, “Kanguva’s” initial strong turnout signals the enduring appeal of its lead actors and the intrigue surrounding its unique premise.
