New Delhi, January 3, 2026: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday reaffirmed that improving farmers’ ease of living remains the government’s highest priority, as the Department of Fertilizers held a day-long ‘Chintan Shivir’ focused on balanced fertilizer use and sustainable agricultural practices.
The brainstorming session, organised in the national capital, brought together senior officials from the Centre and state governments, agricultural scientists, public sector undertakings, cooperatives, and private industry representatives to discuss policy execution with farmers at the centre.
Addressing the participants, Nadda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance approach places farmers at the heart of every policy decision. He stressed that the Department of Fertilizers has ensured uninterrupted availability of fertilizers to farmers despite logistical, global, and supply-side challenges.
He noted that a combination of record domestic production and timely imports helped meet agricultural demand during the year, reflecting the effectiveness of farmer-centric reforms undertaken by the government.
The Union Minister underlined the need for balanced fertilizer application to protect soil health and boost long-term productivity. He added that multiple ministries and departments will work in close coordination to address issues such as excessive fertilizer use and diversion for non-agricultural purposes.
According to him, improving awareness among farmers and strengthening monitoring mechanisms will be key to ensuring sustainability in agriculture.
Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Anupriya Patel said the Prime Minister envisions India emerging as a global food provider, and initiatives like the Chintan Shivir play a crucial role in shaping policies aligned with that goal.
She expressed confidence that the ideas generated during the discussions would contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
Fertilizer Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra said the Shivir was designed as an interactive and inclusive platform, ensuring that every stakeholder’s idea received serious consideration. He emphasized that government bodies, PSUs, and the private sector collectively focused on farmer welfare while deliberating policy improvements.
During the one-day event held at the National Agricultural Science Complex, participants were divided into 15 thematic groups, each examining key challenges and opportunities within the fertilizer sector.
The groups discussed a wide range of issues, including:
Development of next-generation fertilizers
Achieving self-reliance in fertilizer production
Enhancing farmer outreach and awareness
Digital transformation of the fertilizer ecosystem
Improving implementation of the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) framework
Senior officials from fertilizer PSUs, cooperative institutions, and private companies actively participated, offering recommendations aimed at improving efficiency, sustainability, and farmer satisfaction.
The Union Minister, Minister of State, and the Fertilizer Secretary personally interacted with each group, listening to suggestions and feedback, underlining the government’s intent to shape policies based on ground realities and expert inputs.
The Chintan Shivir concluded with a collective commitment to strengthen India’s fertilizer management system while ensuring environmental sustainability and farmer prosperity.
