New Delhi, July 10, 2025 — At the 11th edition of India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced that India has witnessed a phenomenal 4,000% growth in solar capacity, bringing the country’s total renewable energy capacity to a significant 227 GW.
Speaking at the event held at Yashobhoomi, a sustainability-focused venue equipped with rooftop solar and eco-friendly infrastructure, Goyal emphasized India’s leadership among G20 nations in meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Highlighting key government initiatives, the Minister spotlighted the PM Surya Ghar Yojana aimed at installing rooftop solar panels for 1 crore households, and the PM Kusum Yojana, which supports solar-powered pumps for farmers, reducing energy bills and increasing self-reliance.
India’s solar photovoltaic module capacity has surged 38 times in the last decade, while photovoltaic cell production has grown 21-fold, Shri Goyal said. He also announced the Cabinet’s recent approval of a massive ₹1 lakh crore Innovation Fund to drive next-generation battery technologies, solid-state energy storage, and circular supply chains—a move that could rival the R&D investments of global clean tech leaders.
Shri Goyal stressed the need for supply chain resilience in the energy sector by reducing over-reliance on specific regions and embracing new technologies. He laid out a four-pillar strategy to secure India’s energy future:
Targeted innovation in battery and storage technologies
Infrastructure development for EVs and energy storage
Supply chain localization and diversification
End-to-end value chain growth including recycling and semiconductors
He reaffirmed India’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, stating that energy storage solutions—like batteries, pumped storage, and hydrogen—will be at the heart of this transformation.
The Minister also commended Palli village in Jammu & Kashmir for becoming India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat, and praised the IESW platform for bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers focused on clean energy, e-mobility, green hydrogen, and battery innovation.
“Energy security is not just a priority—it’s a national responsibility,” Shri Goyal concluded, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat in the energy sector.
