Air Travel Gets Easier as India Pushes Passenger-Friendly Aviation Reforms

New Delhi, March 18: Air travel in India is becoming more convenient and inclusive as the government rolls out a fresh set of passenger-focused measures aimed at improving comfort, transparency, and accessibility across the aviation sector.

India has rapidly climbed to become the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, driven by expanding connectivity and affordability under regional schemes. With airports now handling over five lakh travellers daily, authorities are placing renewed emphasis on making the flying experience smoother for every passenger.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced multiple initiatives designed to enhance the journey from entry to boarding. Affordable food outlets under the UDAN Yatri Café initiative, book-sharing facilities like Flybrary, and free Wi-Fi services at airports are among the steps already implemented to improve passenger comfort.

In a bid to standardize airline practices and protect passenger interests, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued new guidelines. Airlines will now be required to keep a majority of seats free from additional charges, ensuring fair seat access for travellers. Families and groups booked under a single PNR will be accommodated together as far as possible.

Additionally, clearer and more transparent rules are being mandated for carrying sports gear, musical instruments, and pets, helping eliminate confusion and unexpected costs. The government has also reinforced strict compliance with passenger rights, particularly in situations involving flight delays, cancellations, or denied boarding.

To improve awareness, airlines must prominently display passenger rights across websites, apps, and airport counters, while also communicating key information in regional languages to reach a wider audience.

These measures reflect the government’s continued focus on elevating service standards, minimizing passenger grievances, and ensuring a seamless and safe travel experience across India’s fast-growing aviation network.
