New Delhi , 18 June – Minister for Social Welfare, SC/ST Welfare, Elections and Cooperation Ravinder Indraj Singh, chaired a review meeting on Wednesday with senior officials from the Delhi Police and the Department of Social Welfare to discuss preparations for the upcoming International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to be observed on June 26.
During the meeting, Shri Ravinder Indraj emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the Social Welfare Department, Police Department and Education Department to achieve a drug-free Delhi. He reviewed the progress of district-level events planned for June 26 and instructed that these be made more impactful and participatory. He stressed the importance of reaching marginalized and economically weaker sections with awareness campaigns and suggested the identification of 64 hotspot areas for street play performances to ensure effective outreach.
The Minister underscored the importance of sensitizing students at the school level about the physical, mental and financial harm caused by drug addiction within families. He recommended promoting dialogues and motivational activities such as street plays, poster exhibitions and inspiring speeches among the youth to address the dangers of substance abuse.
Social welfare minister also directed the district-level Social Welfare teams to work in collaboration with local MLAs and District Magistrates for a more effective de-addiction campaign.
Officials from the Social Welfare Department informed the Minister that public and media engagement would play a key role in the campaign’s success. Efforts will include radio jingles on FM channels, audiovisual awareness messages at strategic locations, and screenings in cinema halls. Students from NSS and NCC will also be actively involved in the campaign.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Shri Ravinder Indraj stated, ‘A Drug-Free, Healthy, and Empowered Delhi’ is our collective resolve. To realize this, the active participation of society, educational institutions, and voluntary organizations is essential. He further noted that the de-addiction campaign is not merely a program but a movement of social awakening that requires people’s participation to bring about lasting change.
The meeting was also attended by Dilraj Kaur, Principal Secretary, Department of Social Welfare; Shri Devesh Chandra Srivastava, Special Commissioner, Delhi Police; and other senior officials from the department.
