Centre Deploys Inter-Ministerial Teams to Assess Flood and Landslide Damage in Northern States

Union Home Ministry directs IMCTs to visit Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir for on-site evaluation and relief coordination

New Delhi : Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government is standing shoulder to shoulder with states affected by natural calamities, mitigating hardships faced by citizens.

Following the directions of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. These teams will assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall, floods, flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides.

The Central Teams are scheduled to visit flood- and landslide-affected districts early next week. Their mandate is to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and review relief operations carried out by the State Governments. An IMCT and a Multi-Sectoral Team have already visited Himachal Pradesh for preliminary evaluation.

Each team is led by a senior officer of Joint Secretary rank from MHA/NDMA and includes senior officials from the Ministries of Expenditure, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Jal Shakti, Power, Road Transport & Highways, and Rural Development.

The MHA remains in constant contact with senior officers in the affected states and has provided all necessary logistical support, including deployment of NDRF teams, Army personnel, and Air Force helicopters to assist with search and rescue and restoration of essential services.

As per established protocol, IMCTs are constituted immediately after severe disasters to assess damage on-site, following which the Central Government provides additional financial assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

During the financial year 2025-26, the Central Government released Rs. 10,498.80 crore to 24 states under SDRF, Rs. 1,988.91 crore from NDRF to 12 states, Rs. 3,274.90 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 20 states, and Rs. 372.09 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to nine states to support immediate relief operations.
