New Delhi, March 28: Drinking coffee in the later hours of the day may be doing more harm to your sleep than simply keeping you awake, according to health experts who caution that caffeine can significantly reduce overall sleep quality.

Doctors explain that caffeine, a stimulant found in coffee, interferes with the body’s natural sleep regulating process by blocking adenosine, a chemical responsible for promoting sleepiness. As a result, even if a person manages to fall asleep, the depth and restorative quality of that sleep may be compromised.
The impact is not limited to delayed sleep onset. Specialists highlight that late consumption can lead to lighter sleep cycles, frequent awakenings, and reduced time spent in deep sleep stages, which are crucial for physical recovery and brain function.
Another concern is the long lasting presence of caffeine in the body. Depending on metabolism, its effects can linger for several hours, meaning an evening cup can still be active well into the night. This can disrupt the body clock and make it harder to maintain a consistent sleep routine.
Health professionals recommend limiting coffee intake to earlier parts of the day, ideally avoiding it at least six to eight hours before bedtime. Making small adjustments to caffeine habits, they say, can lead to noticeable improvements in sleep patterns, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.
