Says mental well being and self awareness are essential for building a peaceful and progressive society

New Delhi, April 5, 2026: Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan emphasised the importance of meditation as a tool for inner transformation and mental clarity while addressing a global conference of meditation practitioners and thought leaders held at Bharat Mandapam.

Highlighting the deeper significance of meditation, the Vice President described it as a process that helps individuals attain peace, clarity, and a balanced outlook in life. He noted that in today’s fast paced world, challenges are not limited to external conflicts but also exist within individuals, making practices like meditation more relevant than ever.

Drawing inspiration from ancient wisdom, he referred to the teachings of Tamil sage Thirumoolar, explaining that meditation acts as an inner light guiding individuals towards truth and self realisation. He added that the human body can be seen as a sacred space, and meditation helps uncover its deeper potential.

The Vice President stated that meditation plays a vital role in reducing stress, sharpening focus, and strengthening emotional resilience. He cautioned against excessive attachment to material success, stressing that true well being lies in achieving a meaningful balance between external achievements and inner peace.

He also rejected the perception that meditation is limited to spiritual seekers, asserting that it is a universal practice beneficial for people from all walks of life. According to him, it enhances thinking ability and supports individuals in leading more fulfilling lives.

Referring to India’s long term development goals, the Vice President underlined that mental wellness must go hand in hand with economic progress. He said that a developed nation requires not only financial growth but also emotionally balanced and mindful citizens.

Expressing concern over increasing substance abuse, particularly among the youth, he suggested that meditation can serve as an effective method to combat addiction by helping individuals manage stress and develop a sense of direction.

Quoting philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, he highlighted the importance of observing thoughts without judgment, noting that such awareness leads to deeper intelligence and personal growth.

The Vice President concluded by stating that meaningful change in society begins with transformation at the individual level. He said that cultivating calm and clarity of mind through meditation is essential for building compassionate communities and a better world.

The event brought together spiritual leaders, scholars, and policymakers to discuss the role of meditation in promoting holistic living and global harmony.
