New Delhi, Dec 9:Union Power Minister Manohar Lal today virtually commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the 250 MW third unit of the 1000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), developed by THDC India Limited (THDCIL). With this, the Tehri plant becomes the largest variable-speed PSP commissioned by a Central Public Sector Enterprise in India.
Calling the achievement a major step toward India’s clean energy transformation, the Minister said, “The commencement of the third unit of the 1000 MW Variable Speed PSP at Tehri marks a landmark moment. This is India’s first variable-speed pumped storage plant and greatly strengthens our renewable energy transition, supporting the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”

He underlined the crucial role of Pumped Storage Plants in ensuring reliable power supply, grid stability, and balancing intermittent renewable energy, especially as the share of solar and wind power continues to grow.
Minister of State for Power Shripad Yesso Naik commended THDCIL for its leadership in the pumped-storage segment and noted its expanding contribution to India’s long-term energy security. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), also congratulated THDCIL for successfully commissioning major hydropower assets this year.
The Tehri PSP, equipped with advanced variable-speed technology, is designed to enhance grid flexibility and improve round-trip efficiency—setting a new benchmark for modern hydropower innovation in India. The commissioning of the third unit reinforces the project’s strategic importance in supporting India’s 24×7 reliable power, peak load management, and renewable energy balancing.
The virtual event was attended by senior officials including Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, Central Electricity Authority; Gurdeep Singh, CMD NTPC; Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD THDCIL; along with other dignitaries and technical experts.
