Diplomatic Tensions Rise as Lee Jae Myung’s Post Draws Sharp Reaction from Israel

Social media remarks referencing past conflict footage and historical tragedies spark rare public disagreement between the two nations.

Seoul: A social media post by Lee Jae Myung has triggered a diplomatic dispute with Israel, after he shared an older video and commented broadly on human suffering during conflicts.

The controversy began when Lee referenced footage from 2024 that allegedly showed Israeli soldiers handling bodies during an operation in the occupied West Bank. In his post, he called for accountability and stressed the importance of upholding human dignity in all circumstances.

Tensions escalated after the South Korean leader drew comparisons between wartime violence, the Holocaust, and historical injustices experienced during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea.

Israel’s foreign ministry reacted strongly, criticising the remarks and calling them inappropriate, particularly in the context of Holocaust remembrance. Officials also questioned the relevance of revisiting an incident that had already been addressed in the past.

Following the backlash, Lee clarified that the video referenced a real incident from 2024 and reiterated his broader message on the need to respect international humanitarian principles.

He emphasised that his comments were rooted in universal values rather than directed at any one country.

The video in question reportedly emerged from an operation near Jenin in the West Bank, where Israeli forces had been engaged in counterterrorism activity. At the time, the Israeli military acknowledged the footage as a serious matter and said it did not align with its standards, adding that a review had been initiated.

Amid the escalating rhetoric, South Korean Foreign Ministry stepped in to clarify that the president’s remarks were intended as a broader reflection on human rights and not a targeted criticism.

The ministry also reiterated condolences for victims of the Holocaust, signalling an attempt to calm tensions.

The episode marks an unusual moment in relations between the two countries, which have generally maintained stable diplomatic ties for decades.

Despite efforts to de-escalate, Lee continued to underline his stance in subsequent remarks, calling for respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a commitment to human dignity.
