SHARDA UNIVERSITY SUICIDE NEWS

Greater Noida, July 19 — A tragic incident unfolded at Sharda University in Greater Noida as a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student, identified as Jyoti Sharma, was found hanging in her hostel room on the night of July 18. The 20-year-old student, originally from Gurugram, allegedly died by suicide, prompting swift police action and the arrest of two university staff members following a formal complaint by her family.

According to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar, “On 18th July 2025, Thana Knowledge Park Police received information that a girl student died by suicide by hanging herself to death at a hostel of Sharda University. Police reached the spot and did the ‘panchayatnama’. Relatives have reached the spot. As per their complaint, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections. Two accused have been taken into custody for questioning. Students were agitated over Sharda University’s administration. They were pacified. The situation is under control. Further action is being undertaken.”

The victim’s family has leveled serious allegations of academic harassment and mental pressure. Jyoti’s brother Akshay claimed that a professor had accused his sister of forging signatures in her assignments. “My father came on Monday and spoke with the HOD. Yesterday morning, he spoke to Jyoti. Later, we heard from her batchmates that teachers taunted her about forgery and threatened to fail her in practicals. She was mentally pressured,” he said. He also alleged that the police resorted to lathi-charge when the family protested.

Her mother, Sunita Sharma, made an emotional appeal: “I want justice for my daughter. Call CM Yogi and PM Modi. I will not move until I get justice. Police lathi-charged us, which is unacceptable. All BDS students are now scared and want to return home.”

The deceased’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Authorities have assured further investigation and action as per the outcome of the inquiry.
