Explore the spiritual importance of Mondays during the holy Shravan month and why Lord Shiva is worshipped with utmost devotion.

The sacred month of Sawan (Shravan) is considered highly auspicious in Hinduism, especially for the worship of Lord Shiva. The first Sawan Somwar (Monday) of 2025 will be observed on July 14, and holds special significance for devotees who observe fasts, offer Jalabhishek, and chant powerful Shiva mantras. Here’s everything you need to know about puja rituals, timing, and do’s and don’ts on this divine day.

Why Is Sawan Somwar So Special?

The month of Sawan marks the beginning of a highly spiritual period in the Hindu calendar. According to scriptures, even a single drop of water offered to the Shivling with devotion during this time is believed to please Lord Shiva, who then blesses devotees with peace, prosperity, and happiness.

Each Monday in Sawan is dedicated to Shiva and is known as Sawan Somwar. Fasting and offering sacred items like Bel Patra, Datura, milk, and holy water on these days is considered extremely beneficial.

When is the First Sawan Somwar in 2025?

As per the Drik Panchang, Sawan month in 2025 began on July 11 and will end on August 9.
The first Sawan Somwar falls on Monday, July 14, 2025.

To gain maximum blessings from Mahadev, follow this simple puja procedure:

  1. Wake up early, bathe, and wear clean clothes.
  2. Visit a Shiva temple or worship at home.
  3. Offer Jal (water) or Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) to the Shivling.
  4. Present Bel Patra, Datura, white flowers, and Bhasma (sacred ash).
  5. Light a diya and chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ 108 times.
  6. Recite the Shiva Chalisa or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for protection and healing.
  7. Maintain a fast if possible, and break it after evening prayers with sattvik food.

🕉 Om Namah Shivaya

🕉 Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:
“ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥”

Chanting these mantras during Brahma Muhurat or evening Sandhya Aarti amplifies spiritual benefits.

While worship can be done throughout the day, the most auspicious time for offering Jalabhishek is:

  • Morning Brahma Muhurat: 4:00 AM – 6:00 AM
  • Pradosh Kaal: 6:45 PM – 8:15 PM (ideal for evening Shiv Aarti)

What Not to Do in Sawan:

  • Avoid consuming non-veg food and alcohol.
  • Refrain from using black clothes or tamasic foods like onion-garlic.
  • Avoid cutting hair or nails on Sawan Mondays.
  • Don’t disrespect nature; trees like Bel, Peepal, and Tulsi are sacred during this time.

If this is your first time observing a Sawan Somwar vrat, keep your heart pure and your intention focused. Even simple offerings made with true devotion reach Lord Shiva.
