New Delhi- Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the critical importance of educating students in regional languages on road safety as a key step toward nurturing responsible and aware citizens. In collaboration with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, MoRTH is working to integrate road safety lessons into school and college curricula across India. This nationwide initiative aims to instill early awareness among the youth, who are vital stakeholders in the country’s efforts to reduce road accidents and promote safe driving habits. The programme was officially inaugurated at a Central School, marking the beginning of a comprehensive road safety awareness drive targeting students at all levels.

Gadkari addressed the 7th Edition of the FICCI Road Safety Awards & Symposium 2025, which was held in New Delhi and themed “Vision Zero: Life First, Always.” He highlighted that while India has made significant progress in strengthening road safety regulations, improving enforcement mechanisms, and upgrading infrastructure, the biggest challenge remains changing human behaviour on the roads. He stated, “The best way to bring about lasting change is to reach our children early—with education, awareness, and training. They are the future drivers, pedestrians, and citizens who will shape road safety culture in India.”

During the event, several initiatives and key announcements were highlighted. The adoption of the Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) aims to enhance vehicle safety standards across the country. The government is also focusing on the enforcement of the Bus Body Code and conducting road safety audits to ensure compliance with safety norms. To improve the working conditions of truck drivers, measures such as air-conditioned truck cabins and fatigue detection systems have been introduced, promoting safer long-distance travel and reducing accident risks.

Gadkari also underscored innovative public awareness campaigns that leverage popular figures and media. National campaigns featuring icons like Amitabh Bachchan and collaborations with musician Shankar Mahadevan are being translated into 22 Indian languages to reach diverse populations across the country. Additionally, the Rah-Veer Scheme rewards Good Samaritans with ₹25,000 for assisting road accident victims, encouraging a culture of empathy and civic responsibility. Pedestrian safety is also being prioritized through the installation of lift-enabled foot overbridges and the promotion of scooter-accessible infrastructure.
The Minister further elaborated on the use of data-driven road safety audits, which identify high-risk areas, analyze accident causes, and implement corrective actions. Citizens, including retired professionals, are being encouraged to volunteer in schools and colleges to spread awareness, further reinforcing community participation in road safety efforts.
Concluding his address, Gadkari stressed that while the government will continue to introduce progressive policies and robust safety frameworks, road safety remains a shared responsibility of every individual. The symposium, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), also recognized companies and institutions for their outstanding contributions to road safety, including leading automotive manufacturers, technology firms, and organizations driving innovation and compliance in this critical sector.
