Priyanka Chopra recently shared a glimpse of her skincare routine on Instagram, revealing her love for ice dunk facials. The practice, also known as an ice facial or cold immersion facial, involves exposing the face to very cold temperatures for a short duration and has gained popularity for its instant de-puffing effect.
Explaining the science behind it, Dr Shweta Nakhawa, Consultant Dermatologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that cold exposure causes temporary constriction of blood vessels in the face. This helps reduce puffiness and swelling, and when the skin warms up again, blood flow returns, giving the face a refreshed and natural glow.
The immediate benefits of an ice facial include reduced facial puffiness, especially around the eyes, temporary tightening of pores, and a refreshed appearance. It can also help soothe mild facial swelling and calm the skin after heat exposure.
However, dermatologists advise that ice facials should be done occasionally and not daily. According to Dr Nakhawa, once or twice a week is generally enough to achieve short-term benefits without stressing the skin barrier.
The routine does not suit everyone. People with sensitive skin, rosacea, broken capillaries, eczema, or other underlying skin conditions may experience increased redness or irritation due to extreme cold.
Overuse or prolonged exposure to ice can also lead to skin irritation, dryness, damage to delicate blood vessels, and numbness. Experts stress that ice facials should be brief, gentle, and done with clean water. Those with existing skin conditions should consult a dermatologist before trying the trend, as it offers only temporary cosmetic benefits and is not a substitute for proper skincare or medical treatment.
