Churachandpur, 13 September 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of infrastructure and welfare projects worth over ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to making Manipur a “symbol of peace, prosperity and progress.”
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister praised the “courage and determination” of the people, calling the state’s hill ranges “a priceless gift of nature” and a testament to residents’ hard work. He noted that “Mani” in Manipur signifies a jewel, highlighting the state’s role in enhancing the Northeast’s vibrancy.
Modi highlighted a sharp increase in investment for roads and railways since 2014. Over ₹3,700 crore has already been spent on National Highways and new projects worth ₹8,700 crore are advancing rapidly. Rail expansion is also underway, with ₹22,000 crore allocated to the Jiribam–Imphal line, which will link Imphal with India’s national rail network. Air connectivity is improving too, with the new ₹400 crore Imphal Airport and helicopter services now operational.
The Prime Minister cited substantial progress in housing, electricity and water access. Nearly 60,000 pucca homes have been built for low-income families, and more than one lakh households now have free power connections. Tap-water coverage has surged from roughly 30,000 households a few years ago to over 3.5 lakh today under the “Har Ghar Nal Se Jal” programme.
Healthcare has also advanced: Churachandpur now hosts its own medical college, and modern facilities are being developed in five hill districts under the PM-DIVINE scheme. Over 2.5 lakh residents have received free treatment through Ayushman Bharat, saving families an estimated ₹350 crore.
Acknowledging past unrest, Modi said he recently met camp residents affected by violence and expressed confidence that “a new dawn of hope and trust” is emerging.
He stressed that lasting development depends on peace and welcomed the ongoing dialogues with groups across the hills and valley. A special relief package of about ₹3,000 crore—including ₹500 crore for displaced families—has been approved, alongside support for constructing 7,000 new houses.
Reiterating that “development of every tribal community is a national priority,” the Prime Minister pointed to the Dharati Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, which is driving progress in over 500 villages. Eighteen Eklavya Model Residential Schools are also being built to strengthen education in tribal regions. Women’s empowerment remains central, with new working women’s hostels planned at nine locations.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other dignitaries joined the event. The newly announced projects include the Manipur Urban Roads and Drainage Improvement initiative (₹3,600 crore), five National Highway projects (₹2,500 crore), and the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project.
