A Legacy of Presidential Rail Journeys

New Delhi- The grandeur of India’s presidential rail journeys came alive today as the historic President’s Saloon was formally opened to the general public at the National Rail Museum, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The special exhibition was inaugurated in the presence of  Aashima Mehrotra, Executive Director (Heritage), Railway Board, who attended as the chief guest, accompanied by  Dinesh Kumar Goyal, Director, National Rail Museum.

The exhibition will remain open from August 19 to August 24, 2025, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside one of the most prestigious railway saloons ever used in India.

The President’s Saloon holds a unique place in India’s rail heritage. Traditionally reserved for the Presidents of India during official state travel, the saloon served not only as a mode of transport but also as a symbol of dignity, governance, and the nation’s growing railway legacy.

This exclusive exhibition allows the public to witness first-hand the interiors of the saloon, which combines luxury with state functionality. Visitors can explore the blend of tradition, elegance, and modern engineering that defined these journeys.

Highlighting decades of history, the exhibition showcases how Indian Railways balanced ceremonial heritage with technological progress. The saloon stands as a testimony to India’s evolving rail network and its ability to carry forward both cultural pride and innovation.

According to officials, the exhibition aims to connect younger generations with India’s lesser-known rail history while also offering railway enthusiasts and historians a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of the nation’s highest office during official tours.

The National Rail Museum has invited people of all age groups to experience this historic exhibition. With its rich collection of locomotives, carriages, and artefacts, the addition of the President’s Saloon to the museum’s offerings is expected to attract a large number of visitors over the week.

By opening the saloon to the public, Indian Railways and the National Rail Museum aim to strengthen awareness of India’s governance symbols and railway heritage, ensuring that the story of the presidential journeys continues to inspire generations.
