President of India Attends Safai Mitra Sammelan in Ujjain

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, September 19, 2024: President Droupadi Murmu graced the Safai Mitra Sammelan  in Ujjain today, where she delivered an address and laid the foundation stone for the Indore-Ujjain Six Lane Road Project. In her speech, the President recognized the crucial role of Safai Mitras, describing them as frontline sanitation warriors who protect society from health risks and disease. She acknowledged their pivotal contribution to the success of cleanliness initiatives across the nation, stating, “Our Safai Mitras deserve the highest credit for the progress we have made in cleanliness at the local, state, and national levels.

President Murmu stressed the responsibility of both the government and society to safeguard the dignity, welfare, and safety of Safai Mitras. She noted ongoing efforts to replace manholes with machine-operated cleaning systems to improve their working conditions. Additionally, she mentioned that various government welfare schemes are being extended to Safai Mitras, along with health check-ups provided through Safai Mitra Suraksha Camps. The President was pleased to highlight that many cities in Madhya Pradesh have already been designated as “Safai Mitra Surakshit” cities.

Speaking about the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission, which runs until 2025, President Murmu emphasized the national goal of achieving total cleanliness, with a focus on solid and liquid waste management, while maintaining the country’s open defecation-free status.

She also highlighted the ongoing nationwide campaign, “Swabhav Swachhata, Sanskar Swachhata,” which encourages citizens to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness in their communities. The President expressed confidence that the people of India will continue to support the Swachh Bharat Mission and contribute to cleanliness efforts through acts of service. She called on all citizens to take a pledge towards creating a cleaner, healthier, and more developed India, aligning with the vision of Mahatma Gandhi
