Mysuru- President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) at Mysuru, Karnataka.
Addressing the gathering, the President emphasized that speech and hearing disorders require early detection and timely intervention by experts. She urged society to respond with awareness, cooperation, and empathy toward people facing such challenges and appreciated AIISH for its crucial role in these areas.
She encouraged the institute to set an example for similar organizations across India and abroad. Praising AIISH’s initiatives such as the ‘Inclusive Therapy Park’—a model facility designed for children with communication disorders—and ‘AIISH Arogya Vani’, a unique awareness programme on early identification of such disorders, the President noted that the institute is also well-positioned to contribute to national policymaking in this field.
Highlighting the growing role of technology, President Murmu stressed the need for developing and manufacturing advanced devices domestically to ensure accessibility at affordable costs. For instance, self-reliant production of cochlear implants would make them widely available to those in need. She called on AIISH to take a leadership role in promoting research, innovation, and collaborations with leading research institutions in the country to strengthen its contribution to nation-building.
The President further noted that the government is working to create a barrier-free environment for divyangjan through various initiatives, including the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan. Making public spaces, infrastructure, and information systems more inclusive, she said, would not only empower differently-abled citizens but also reaffirm society’s care and concern for them.
During her visit, President Murmu interacted with children undergoing treatment at AIISH as well as with divyang persons who have achieved success in various fields after receiving treatment and support at the institute.
