Chandigarh. The Central Government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) is steadily fulfilling the vision of “Housing for All”. Over the past nine years, under the leadership of Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, more than 16 lakh homes have been sanctioned for minority beneficiaries, 25 lakh for SC/ST families, and 46 lakh for OBC households. The scheme has also prioritized slum dwellers, approving 29 lakh homes across the country with an investment of Rs.1.27 lakh crore, including Rs.44,218 crore in central assistance.
Manohar Lal emphasized that homes built under PMAY-Urban are far superior to those constructed under the earlier Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), with better quality, size, and essential facilities like toilets, water, and electricity. Unlike JNNURM, which focused mainly on slums, PMAY-Urban aims at “Housing for All.” In its first Cabinet meeting on June 10, 2024, the government resolved to support construction or purchase of 3 crore additional homes for rural and urban beneficiaries over the next five years. Between 2004–2014, only 13.46 lakh houses were sanctioned, whereas between 2014–2024, the BJP-led government approved 1.20 crore houses, nine times more.

This includes 1 crore for EWS, 14 lakh for LIG, and 6 lakh for MIG categories. So far, more than 94 lakh houses have been completed 10 times higher than previous schemes. PMAY-Urban has seen an unprecedented investment of Rs.8 lakh crore (21 times higher), with Rs.2 lakh crore in central assistance. Of this, rs.1.64 lakh crore has already been released, along with Rs.58,868 crore in interest subsidies for 25 lakh beneficiaries, 2,616 times higher than earlier programs. For the first time, 6 lakh MIG beneficiaries have received interest subsidies worth Rs.12,885 crore. The scheme has also boosted women’s empowerment, with nearly 93 lakh homes registered either in women’s names or under joint ownership.
Government Committed to “Housing for All”
The Central Government continues to focus on providing homes to the poor and needy. Under the guidance of Union Minister Manohar Lal, efforts are being made to identify genuine beneficiaries nationwide, including SC/ST, minority, and backward class families.
