Prime Minister Narendra Modi Calls for Women’s Reservation in Legislatures

Women’s Representation to Strengthen India’s Democratic Framework

New Delhi, April 9 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underscored the urgent need to introduce reservation for women in legislative bodies, stating that greater inclusion would significantly enhance the strength and participation of India’s democratic system.

The Prime Minister highlighted that increasing women’s presence in lawmaking institutions would bring fresh perspectives and improve decision making processes. He warned that delaying such a reform would be unfortunate and could slow progress toward a more inclusive governance structure.

Modi shared his detailed views through a recently published opinion piece, where he outlined how the proposed measure could reshape democratic participation. He also reiterated his stance on social media platform X, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of empowering women and ensuring balanced representation.

Reaffirming his position in both English and Hindi, he described the move as a timely reform that would make democracy more vibrant and participatory, while reflecting the aspirations of a diverse population.
