Guwahati, 13 September 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined thousands in Assam’s capital to honour the centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, hailing the music legend as a voice of unity whose art continues to inspire the nation.

Calling the day “truly precious,” the Prime Minister said the rhythm of Bhupen Da’s music “still flows everywhere,” adding that his melodies expressed a profound love for Mother India and embodied the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. Modi recalled Hazarika’s journey from the banks of the Brahmaputra to Kashi and beyond, noting that even after global travels and a U.S. doctorate, he remained “a true son of Assam.”

Modi described Hazarika’s songs as both spiritual practice and social commitment—works that gave voice to the marginalized and strengthened the idea of national integration. He highlighted the biography of Hazarika released at the event and stressed that the government will continue sharing his life and music with every household

Remembering how Bhupen Da championed harmony even during times of unrest, the Prime Minister said conferring the Bharat Ratna on him underscored the Centre’s dedication to the Northeast. He pointed to rapid development across the region and landmark projects such as the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, one of India’s longest bridges linking Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Modi emphasized that connectivity is not only about roads or railways but also about culture. He cited recent nationwide celebrations of Assam’s heroes—from Veer Lachit Borphukan to the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav—as part of a broader effort to strengthen cultural bonds. He reminded the audience that Assam’s art, attire, cuisine, and handicrafts deserve global recognition and personally endorsed the branding of the state’s famed gamocha.

The event was attended by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Pema Khandu, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.
