Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday for a landmark two-day state visit, becoming the first foreign head of government to be hosted by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu since he assumed office in November 2023.
Modi was received at Velana International Airport in Malé with a grand ceremonial welcome, including a traditional cultural dance performed by local school children. President Muizzu, accompanied by key members of his cabinet — including the ministers of foreign affairs, defence, finance, and homeland security — greeted the Indian leader warmly on the tarmac.
“This visit is of historic significance and symbolizes a potential reset in India-Maldives relations,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. “The fact that PM Modi is the first state guest under President Muizzu’s leadership reflects the importance both nations attach to their strategic partnership.”
The visit comes at a crucial time, amid strained diplomatic ties in recent months over regional influence, maritime security concerns, and social media controversies. The Indian Prime Minister’s presence during the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations on July 26 is being viewed as a diplomatic breakthrough and a gesture of goodwill.
In a statement prior to his departure, PM Modi said:
“This year also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives. I look forward to advancing our joint vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership and strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.”
During the visit, Modi is expected to inaugurate multiple India-assisted development projects, which include infrastructure, health, and community development initiatives aimed at boosting the Maldivian economy and bilateral connectivity.
The Maldives trip comes on the heels of PM Modi’s successful two-day visit to the United Kingdom, where India and the UK signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement, slashing tariffs on goods such as cars, whisky, and textiles.
