Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu – Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a major transmission infrastructure project by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) to evacuate 2,000 MW of clean nuclear energy from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4. The event was held in Tuticorin, marking a significant push towards enhancing India’s green energy capacity and meeting rising electricity demands in southern states.

The Kudankulam Transmission System, developed under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) by POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Limited, involves construction of a 400 kV D/C (quad) transmission line connecting Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant to the Tuticorin-II GIS Power Station, along with advanced 400 kV GIS terminal equipment at Tuticorin.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi, Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan, Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister Thangam Thenarasu, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, and senior officials from the Centre, state government, and POWERGRID.

This strategic transmission line will enable seamless power evacuation from the upcoming nuclear units to beneficiary regions including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry. It aligns with India’s broader vision to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, as part of the country’s energy transition roadmap and commitment to climate goals under international agreements.

As of June 30, 2025, POWERGRID operates 284 substations, over 1.80 lakh circuit kilometers of transmission lines, and a transformation capacity of 5.66 lakh MVA. With the use of cutting-edge automation and digital tools, the company maintains a system availability of over 99.84%, reinforcing its position as a backbone of India’s national power grid.
