Brasilia/Rio de Janeiro, July 7 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a landmark state visit to Brasilia, following the conclusion of the 17th BRICS Summit 2025 held in Rio de Janeiro. This visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone, as PM Modi becomes the first Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades to undertake an official bilateral visit to Brazil.

Brazil is the fourth destination on PM Modi’s ongoing five-nation diplomatic tour, which has already included strategic stops in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and participation in the BRICS 2025 summit in Rio. The fifth and final leg of his tour is yet to be announced.

Reflecting on the Rio summit, PM Modi shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“The Rio leg of my Brazil visit was very productive. We had extensive deliberations at the BRICS Summit. I compliment President Lula and the Brazilian Government for their efforts in making this platform even more effective. My bilateral meetings with world leaders will also boost India’s friendship with various nations.”

The BRICS Summit 2025 saw high-level discussions on global governance, sustainable development, digital transformation, and South-South cooperation. India’s leadership was widely acknowledged for its commitment to multilateralism and inclusive global growth.

In Brasilia, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, aimed at enhancing cooperation across multiple key sectors. Both leaders are expected to finalize joint agreements and long-term partnerships in areas such as:

  • Trade and commerce – Boosting bilateral investment and diversifying economic cooperation.
  • Defence and strategic affairs – Exploring defence production, military training, and space collaboration.
  • Energy and climate – Strengthening collaboration in renewable energy, especially biofuels, solar, and green hydrogen.
  • Digital technology and innovation – Advancing AI, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure partnerships.
  • Agriculture and healthcare – Promoting smart farming, food security, and pharmaceutical cooperation.
  • People-to-people exchanges – Expanding educational, cultural, and tourism linkages.

India and Brazil, both emerging economies and G20 members, share common aspirations in shaping global economic policies and pushing for United Nations Security Council reforms. The two nations are also part of platforms like IBSA, BRICS, and G4, strengthening their voice in the Global South.

PM Modi’s Brazil visit comes at a time when India is expanding its diplomatic footprint in Latin America. With shared democratic values, economic complementarities, and growing multilateral engagement, the India-Brazil relationship is poised to become a cornerstone of South-South cooperation.

The outcomes of this state visit are expected to lay the groundwork for a new era of collaboration between the two nations, boosting not just bilateral ties but also reinforcing their positions on the global stage.
