New Delhi- In a significant update, the Government of India has extended the last date for submitting nominations and recommendations for the prestigious Padma Awards 2026. Earlier scheduled to close on July 31, the nomination window will now remain open till August 15, 2025. The decision is expected to encourage more public participation in selecting deserving individuals for the nation’s highest civilian honours.
The nominations for the Padma Awards 2026 had officially opened on March 15, 2025, and can only be submitted online through the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal at https://awards.gov.in. The awards — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri — will be announced on the occasion of Republic Day 2026. These civilian honours are conferred by the President of India to individuals who have demonstrated distinguished and exceptional achievements across diverse fields.
Instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards recognize excellence in areas such as art, literature, education, medicine, social work, science and engineering, sports, public affairs, trade and industry, and civil service. Any citizen of India, regardless of race, gender, occupation, or background, is eligible for nomination. However, serving government employees, including those working with public sector undertakings, are not eligible — with the exception of doctors and scientists.
The government has been working towards making these awards more inclusive and representative of grassroots excellence. Under its vision of “People’s Padma,” citizens are encouraged to identify and nominate unsung heroes from across the country. Nominations are especially encouraged for individuals belonging to marginalized sections of society, including women, SCs, STs, divyang persons, and those who are selflessly serving the nation in their respective capacities.
Individuals submitting nominations must provide a detailed account of the achievements of the person being recommended. The nomination form requires a citation in narrative form, not exceeding 800 words, that clearly outlines the distinguished service or accomplishment of the nominee. All relevant details must be filled in as specified on the official portal.
Comprehensive guidelines, eligibility criteria, and nomination formats are available on both the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal and the Ministry of Home Affairs website at https://mha.gov.in. Further information about the rules and statutes related to Padma Awards can also be accessed through the official Padma Awards Portal at https://padmaawards.gov.in/AboutAwards.aspx.
The extension of the deadline reflects the government’s commitment to making the Padma Awards a true celebration of India’s diverse talent. Citizens are urged to actively participate in the process and ensure that the nation’s real heroes — many of whom remain unnoticed — get the recognition they deserve.
