Number of Brazilians forced to leave homes due to floods exceeds 300,000

Brasília, May 10 , 2024 : The number of people forced to leave their homes in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul due to floods has reached 327,105, the civil defence service of the state said on Friday. Most of the displaced persons moved to the
homes of their friends or relatives, while about 68,000 have taken refuge in shelters, the service added. So far, at least 107 people have died as a result of the floods, 754 have been injured, and 314 others are listed as missing, according to the latest data. Heavy rainfall in Brazil’s southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul on the border with Uruguay started on April 29, resulting in devastating floods. Flooding on the Guaiba River, which flows through the state capital, Porto Alegre, has so far become the worst since 1941. In total, the
disaster has affected 1.4 million people. In Porto Alegre, the international airport has been closed indefinitely amid ongoing flooding.
