Biden administration revokes Intel, Qualcomm licenses to supply Huawei

Washington, May 8 , 2024 :The Biden administration has revoked the licenses extended to Intel and Qualcomm to supply semiconductors to the communications technology giant Huawei, the Financial Times reported. The US Commerce Department has affected Huawei’s access to laptop and mobile phone chips by revoking certain export licenses, notifying affected companies without detailing which ones, the report said on Tuesday.
“We continuously assess how our controls can best protect our national security and foreign policy interests, taking into consideration a constantly changing threat environment and technological landscape,” a Commerce Department spokesperson was quoted by the report as saying. The report added that Qualcomm has not responded to the comments, and Intel has declined to comment. In October 2022, the Biden administration introduced regulations to limit the export of equipment and components used in producing advanced chips to firms in China. A year later, the Commerce Department implemented additional restrictions on semiconductor exports, revising the definitions of artificial intelligence chips and expanding licensing requirements to
prevent their resale to China across more than 40 countries.
